You’ve seen collagen sold for glowing skin. But here’s what the marketing leaves out: it works better on your joints.
Does collagen actually help joint pain?
Yes. And the evidence is stronger than anything collagen can show for your skin.
A 2024 review pooled 35 randomised trials covering 3,165 people with osteoarthritis [1]. Less pain. Better joint function. The researchers rated it solid enough to recommend clinically.
So why is it sold as a beauty product? Because that’s where the money is.

Wait, better than for skin?
Quite a bit better, yes.
For your joints, you’ve got 35 trials and over 3,000 people, all pointing the same way [1]. For your skin, the largest independent review found improvements in hydration and elasticity, and nothing at all for wrinkles [2]. And the most careful analysis found most of the skin benefit came from studies paid for by collagen companies.

Here’s where it gets confusing. Two completely different products get sold for joints, and their doses differ by a factor of 250.

Collagen peptides: 10 g a day
This is the ordinary powder. Same stuff that’s sold for your skin.
In one trial, 147 athletes with joint pain took 10 grams a day for 24 weeks. They reported less pain across several measures compared with placebo [1].
The theory is that the peptides survive digestion, reach your cartilage, and give the cells there something to build with.
Undenatured type II: 40 mg a day
Different product entirely. And that tiny dose isn’t a typo.
UC-II comes from chicken cartilage, processed gently so the protein keeps its original shape. The shape is the whole point.
In a trial of 191 people over 180 days, 40 mg beat placebo on overall symptom scores. It also beat glucosamine and chondroitin combined [3].
So why does so little work? Because it isn’t doing the same job.
Think of it this way. Collagen peptides are a delivery of bricks to a building site. UC-II is a memo to the demolition crew telling them they’ve got the wrong address. In osteoarthritis, part of the damage comes from your own immune system attacking the type II collagen in your cartilage. UC-II appears to work through your gut immune system, training it to stand down.
You don’t need a lorry of bricks to deliver a memo. That’s why 40 milligrams is enough.

Collagen peptides work as raw material at around 10 g a day. Undenatured type II works as an immune signal at 40 mg. Both have trial support, but they’re not interchangeable.
So which one?
Already taking collagen for your skin? You’re probably in the right range already. Ten grams covers both.
Just want joint relief? Look at UC-II. It’s got head-to-head data against glucosamine, and 40 mg is easier than a scoop of powder.
Either way, give it months. Those trials ran 24 weeks and 180 days. Nothing here works in a fortnight.
What won’t it do?
It won’t rebuild your cartilage. No study has shown that.
The trials measured pain and function, and both improved [1]. Reversing joint damage is a different claim, and nobody’s demonstrated it.
The effects are moderate too. So if you’ve got significant joint disease, this belongs in a conversation with your doctor alongside proper treatment.

Bottom line
Collagen has a better case for your joints than your skin. Which is the opposite of how it’s sold.
